Scott ‘The Denizen’ Chardonnay 2017

Llama Blue

Scott+The+Denizen+Chardonnay+NV+-+low+res.jpg

Bottled in June 2017.

Winemaking Notes

Chardonnay turns on for the length and breadth of the Adelaide Hills.

This wine is from the cool, elevated sub-region, Piccadilly Valley.

Hand-picked, chilled overnight and whole bunch pressed directly to one new and four old French oak barrels for wild fermentation and partial malo.

Some richness and texture from barrel fermentation and lees contact, yet a bright and racy wine.

‘Piccadilly Valley’ Chardonnay 2016

Llama Blue

Tasting Notes

The Piccadilly Valley is home to some of the oldest, and coldest, vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, and this in turn makes for Chardonnay that is quite tight, elegant and focused. So think of white stone fruits and citrus, bright but with depth of flavour.

Winemaking Notes

The Uley vineyard was planted in 1983. 550m elevation, a steep south-facing slope, shallow sandy loam soils, flecked abundantly with quartz, over deep sandstone = tight, fragrant and elegant, and mature, manicured vines make for exceptional quality Chardonnay grapes.

The fruit is handpicked, chilled overnight and then whole bunched  pressed directly to old French oak barriques, where it undergoes natural fermentation.

Partial malolactic fermentation and no lees stirring past fermentation.

Bottled in February 2017. 80 dozen produced.

'Hope Forest’ Syrah 2015

Llama Blue

Syrah+2015+web.jpg

Winemaking Notes

From the Nagel Vineyard in Hope Forest, a very cool part of the southern Adelaide Hills. Dave Gartelmann grows the gapes in an un-certified biodynamic fashion and I just LOVE this block. Yakka territory. Sandy loams dotted with ironstone over a sandstone subsoil where you will find some weathered quartz and a little orange clay loam, a great reservoir for water and the fissures allow the roots to delve deeply.

Hand picked, some whole bunch (1 out of 4 bins so 25%-ish) natural ferment, a few months on skins, old oak, unfined and un-filtered.

Bottled in June 2016.

Halliday Wine Companion 2018

Light, bright, crimson-purple; this combines fragrance, finesse and elegance on the one hand, and fine-grained, savoury tannins on the other. Unfined and unfiltered, the only addition SO2, leaving the red fruits intact. This is a world apart from Barossa Valley Shiraz – only some will like both. Screwcap. 13.8% alc. Rating: 95 To 2035 $40James Halliday.
